2011 Alternative Press Expo

The Alternative Press Expo in San Francisco is happening this weekend (10/1 - 2)! I'll have a table of My Milk Toof merchandise - some made especially for this convention - along with two showcases of ickle and Lardee models from the story "Sick Lardee" to see in person!

"Okay Lardee, this is a story just for you."

"Once upon a time..."

...In an enchanted, faraway land...

...Lived a little Toof named Sir Lardee.

Every day, Sir Lardee loved nothing better than to walk along, carrying
a favorite stick.

Sir Lardee would often play a game to see how high the stick
could be thrown (Usually, it wasn't very high).

One day, while Sir Lardee was playing, the stick landed
on a rock.

"Ouch," said the rock, "Ouch, on my head!"

Sir Lardee immediately apologized for the inconvenience,
especially since it's not often that you come across a talking
rock (And when you do, it's not good to throw sticks at them).

Fortunately the rock accepted the apology, and seemed like an
overall sincere individual.

" I wonder if you can help me?" asked the rock. "There is a secret
treasure hidden deep inside these woods. I would redeem it myself,
but being a rock, it has been very difficult to endeavor that journey.
If you are kind and adventurous, would you be able to retrieve
the treasure? With that fortune, I would finally be able to retire- for
I am an old rock, and have had a very hard life."

Sir Lardee, being a Toof with a very sympathetic heart,
agreed to the task.

"But please be careful," admonished the rock, "Out here in these woods,
there are many dangerous things for a little Toof like yourself."

Heeding that advice, the journey began in search for the treasure.

Sir Lardee learned the woods are filled with things
you don't want to touch.

And the moment you DO touch something...

...you'll probably wish you didn't.

(Here lies people who touched things)

Sir Lardee bravely pushed onward, leaving a trail of candy crumbs
behind so not to get lost.

Along the way, the woods began to look really weird.

And hostile.

And there were times Sir Lardee couldn't even see which way to go.

It was beginning to seem this journey might've been too much for
one little Toof.

Fortunately, a mysterious clearing presented itself-
Sir Lardee knew the treasure had to be near.

Below a giant tree sat the wise and bearded, Wizard ickle.

Wizard ickle spoke: "If you are to claim the treasure,
you must first pass one test."

"Way above this tree grows the only apple in the woods. Attain it,
and the treasure is yours. And if at all possible, please hurry- for
I am super hungry."

Sir Lardee did not hesitate, and knew exactly what to do...

With the favorite stick so often played with, Sir Lardee took
one big throw...

...And knocked the apple down (it was the highest throw, ever).

"You have definitely earned this treasure," praised Wizard ickle,
"Go now, and spend this fortune on whatever you please!"

And so, Sir Lardee began the journey back (And the Wizard ickle
ceased to be hungry for the next three hours).

Sir Lardee generously gave all the treasure to the rock.

And the rock was very grateful.

With that fortune, the rock was finally able to retire.

Happily, all was well in the enchanted, faraway land.

"And can you guess what Sir Lardee did next?"

"What?"

"Ate some delicious soup!"

"Heh-heh, works every time."

Hello Everyone,

ickle and Lardee will return soon! In spite of the lack of posts, I've been extremely busy working on a very ambitious My Milk Toof story that I'm hoping you will all love. It'll be like nothing I've ever done before, and has required weeks and weeks of preparation and testing. But I'm relieved and excited that i'm just about finished, and will post it very, very soon. Just to give you a taste, here's a little behind the scenes shot of the mess I'm making:

It's exciting to be celebrating Year Two of producing this blog- so much has happened! After exactly two years of starting My Milk Toof in March 2009, the official published book is now released- Hooray! In addition, one of the huge highlights for me was the "Your Milk Toof" contest. Getting a chance to see everyone's talent and creativity was fantastic, and I hate to see it end. My plan is to leave the tumblr online as a community fan page which you all can continue to contribute to, whether it be your own Toof characters or just fan art. Please keep it coming- it's so wonderful for me to click on that site and be inspired.

A couple quick troubleshooting notes for all submissions:

UPLOADING- You can upload images straight into tumblr. When you click in tumblr "Submit your TOOF!", make sure to change the option that says "Submit a text post" to "Submit a photo".

RESOLUTION- Make sure your image resolution is big enough to read. Once you submit an image, check back to the site when it's posted to make sure the image is clear. If it's not, please resubmit with a higher resolution image.

Hello Everyone-I have some exciting announcements to make!

First of all, thank you all so much for your overwhelming enthusiasm for the upcoming My Milk Toof book. Thanks to pre-orders and support from bookstores, the book is already going through a second printing, even before its release!

There are two planned book promotions to look out for in the coming weeks: 1) A creative art contest put on by me and Chronicle Books where you can win a free signed copy of the book, and 2) A special video featuring behind the scenes footage of the making of My Milk Toof. Secondly, I've been working on finally creating a separate site for all My Milk Toof merchandise, and it will launch some time in March. For now it will feature a couple new prints along with the previous three featured.

Hi everyone,

I'm really excited to show you the new winter merchandise I've been working hard on getting together!

Because of the release of the upcoming book with Chronicle, I'm hoping to soon hand off the merchandise work to an established company to handle. That way I can go back to focusing on the blog and posting new stories, and not have to spend so much time organizing goods and shipping them out.

So this time around, it was especially important for me to create something hand made and unique just for you. With that, I'm proud to present the ickle and Lardee Moleskin Pocket Book! (see above post for pictures)

Each pocket book has been hand screen printed on both sides by me using a Gocco Printer. There are two different versions available, one with ickle and the other with Lardee. In addition, I have some mini prints and greeting cards that will accompany the pocket book, and will be available in two separate sets. Many readers have contacted me about not being able to make purchases until next month and fearing they will sell out. Hi Everyone,

I hope all you wonderful readers around the world are enjoying your summer! Mine's been great, but BUSY. Amidst some traveling, I am also still working hard on putting some finishing touches on the upcoming My Milk Toof book with Chronicle. It's going through its final editorial stages, and once that's finished I'll be back tending to the blog. Thanks again for your patience!

Another thing I've been working on is finally getting some new merchandise together! At some point in early August, I'll have three limited edition giclée prints available for purchase. The images are from "Bed Buddies", "Summer: Thursday", and "Up and Away" (pictured below)- and I have to tell you, the prints came out AMAZING. They are 11" x 17" (28cm x 48cm) with a half inch white border, signed and numbered, and printed on beautiful velvet fine art paper. I'll make an announcement ahead of time when exactly they'll be ready so please stay tuned for more updates!

My Milk Toof: Our First Year

It's hard to believe it's been a year since this blog began! Looking back, I can see how much the blog has evolved and become something I never could've imagined. Your comments and emails have been so inspiring, and I am extremely lucky to have such wonderful and dedicated readers!

And now for some news:

This could not have been timed better, but after exactly a year I am thrilled to announce I will be publishing a book with Chronicle Books to be released Spring 2011! They produce some of the best designed books out there, and I trust that the project is in great hands. The book will be a collection of everyone's favorite stories, along with some brand new adventures. As the book gets closer to release, I'll fill you in on more details. Lately I've been busy shooting the new book content, which explains why updates the past couple months have been lagging. But once the book is done, I promise I'll update more regularly.

So there it is. Thank you all for helping to make this such an amazing first year- hoping for many more to come!

2009 has been a great year for me, and I owe so much to you- my wonderful readers! Just a year ago today I was newly unemployed, frustrated, and lost as to what my future had in store for me. But things can change so quickly! To be given the opportunity to do what I love and get such overwhelming support for it is not something I take for granted.

That's why i'm happy to announce that I have donated a percentage of My Milk Toof merchandise sales to Save the Children on behalf of all the fans. The organization's campaign Rewrite the Future supports "the lives of children in conflict-affected areas through the power of education". For more information click on the link, and if you can contribute more it would be a great way to start off the year.

Once again, thank you all so much from the bottom of my heart. And if you're stuck creatively or professionally, I hope my journey can be of some encouragement to not give up. I can't wait to show you what adventures ickle and Lardee have next, and I wish you all the best in the new year!

PS: Regarding the book, unfortunately there are no plans at this time to reprint. My apologies to those who were not able to order a copy. Please rest assure there will be other great ickle and Lardee things to purchase in the coming months.

UPDATE (11/9) : The "ickle and Lardee's Grand Adventure" book is officially sold out! Thank you all so much! It's been surreal packing up hundreds of mailers to send all over the world (I kept the Berkeley Post Office real busy this weekend). Stay tuned on the blog, next up I have a small limited set of ickle and Lardee plush pins to sell!

Unfortunately, the postcards and minicards won't be for sale at this time. It's been very difficult to manage multiple products when dealing with international shipping, so i've decided to sell one thing at a time. Once the books are sold out, I will make the postcards available for purchase.

APE Recap

Thanks to everyone who came out to APE- It was a lot of fun, and I enjoyed meeting you! The support was overwhelming, and I can't thank you enough for helping to make my first convention experience a success. Please keep in touch!

And now, good news to those who couldn't make it to APE.... I have a good amount of books left for everyone to order online! Additionally there will be limited postcard sets and minicards to purchase as well. At APE, I featured some stuffed ickle and Lardee pins, but they sold out. Stay tuned and I may have more to sell down the line.

I'm currently preparing everything so the buying and shipping will go smoothly, which may take an extra week to get set up. I apologize for the delay, but i'd hate for you to buy the book and wait forever for the book to deliver. To answer a few questions:

Will you ship internationally?

Yes!

Can I reserve a book?

Sorry, I can't handle holding books for anyone right now. But I am pretty sure there is a good chance for everyone to get a book.

Will there be a second printing?

For now, i'm not planning on it. But I have plans for other things to sell down the line, so stay tuned.

APE Sneak Peek

Hi everyone,

The Alternative Press Expo in San Francisco is happening this weekend (10/17-18)! I will have a table to present some limited edition My Milk Toof products, along with two showcases of ickle and Lardee models to see in person! My booth number is #274 and it's located near the programming room.

A Little Sneak Peek

I am proud to present my first self published book "ickle and Lardee's Grand Adventure", with only 500 copies printed. It contains the three complete stories of ickle and Lardee's Grand Adventure posted last June. The book is 5.25" x 6.5" (13.3 cm x 16.5 cm), 82 pages in full color. Each book is numbered and will come with three complimentary mini prints. Here are some pictures. Click here.

Below are the three complimentary matte prints that will come with the book. Size is 3.5" x 5"(8.8cm x 12.7cm) and they have rounded corners. Click here.

Next are a limited run of postcards, featuring sixteen different images from various stories. They are 4.12" x 5.75" (10.5 cm x 14.6 cm), 16pt thickness with a glossy finish. Click here.

Lastly I will be selling a set of twelve minicards. They are only 1" x 2.75" (2.5 cm x 7 cm) and contain some artist information on the back. These are limited to only 30 packs. Click here.

Hi everyone!

This is long overdue, but I've been meaning to express how grateful I am to all of you- my readers -for supporting My Milk Toof with your wonderful comments! It's such a great feeling to create something I love and get to share it with the world in such an immediate way.

I've been using Facebook to write updates, but I thought this would be a great time to reach out to everybody directly on the blog and answer some questions:

Q: How did you come up with the idea for My Milk Toof?

A: After working five years in the video game industry, I finally was given the opportunity to explore some personal projects. I was vaguely familiar with what a "milk tooth" was, and after a little research I thought it was a really cute term and began developing the idea.

Q: What are ickle and Lardee made out of?

A: Polymer clay, painted with acrylics, and finished with a varnish.

Q: Why does ickle's name always start with a lower case letter?

A: I found that doing so helped reinforce ickle's small size; It is also for aesthetic reasons.

Q: How long does it take you to come up with a new adventure? Why can't it be more often?

A: It depends on the storyline. Recently the posts have become much more ambitious, so it can take two weeks or more to fully execute (including storyboards, making new models/props, shooting, and editing).

Q: Are there any plans for a book? Toys? Animated movies?

A: Thanks to your support and enthusiasm, it is very likely that a real published My Milk Toof book will exist someday! As far as toys and animation, I think it's a possibility if the book is successful.

I mentioned having some prints to sell, but unfortunately they did not come out well or to the quality I had hoped for, so I won't be selling them. But currently I'm working on self-publishing a limited run book of "ickle and Lardee's Grand Adventure" to be sold at the San Francisco Alternative Press Expo in October. I know many of you can't make it, so hopefully I'll have some leftover to sell via Etsy after the Expo.

Once again, thank you so much for helping to open so many doors for this project, and I hope I can keep bringing you great stories to brighten your days!
